ADOPT A ROOM - UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA FAIRVIEW
Children in conventional hospital rooms will tell you that they are frustrated and demoralized by a lack of control and by a sense of disconnectedness from their lives beyond the hospital. Noise and medical equipment are distracting and demoralizing. Floor plans often make it awkward for encumbered patients to perform basic activities – such as bathroom visits – without embarrassment and loss of dignity.
Parents say that most rooms provide poor accommodations for long visits. The rooms are cramped, with little privacy, and lack a way for parents to maintain contact with their professional and home lives.
To address these issues, the design team at Perkins + Will conducted a two-year study of the hospital experience of long-duration pediatric patients and their families. After listening intently to both groups, their designers became convinced that rooms must provide a better quality of life for all involved.
To solve such a complex challenge, the team approached this problem with a characteristic mix of deep research, technical sophistication and creative design. Graybow's design and integration of technology into these special rooms using AMX control simplified integrated functionality with coordination of content delivery. This will have a revolutionary effect on the future of all patient room settings: where comfort, control and the ability to connect with life outside the hospital, is a desired outcome. Simply put: these rooms offer the comfort of a five star hotel in an intense medical environment.
The overall results of these patient rooms were to take them into the realm of design solutions that increased the quality of life and for the first time an environment centered on patient care. This project was selected by the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) to receive the 2008 FAB Grand Award and also is a PRO AV Spotlight Judges' Award winning project.
